Privacy policy
Honeycomb has no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. Your library stays on your computer.

Who this is
Honeycomb is made by n1ji, an independent developer. Questions about this policy go to [email protected].
What stays on your computer
Everything Honeycomb knows about your music is stored in a database in the app’s data folder on your own computer: the folders you add, track details read from your files, ratings, play counts, playlists, lyrics it has found and your settings. None of it is uploaded anywhere, and I can’t see it.
Honeycomb reads your music files and only writes to them when you save changes in the tag editor. Libraries you import from another player are read on your computer too.
To show the current song in your system’s media controls (the Now Playing widget on macOS, the media overlay on Windows), Honeycomb passes the title, artist, album and cover to your operating system. That stays on your device.
The two things that go online
Honeycomb connects to the internet for two things only.
- Update check. When Honeycomb starts, then every 30 minutes, it asks GitHub’s API for the newest Honeycomb release and compares it with the build you’re running. The request includes your build’s commit ID and Honeycomb’s version number. If you built Honeycomb yourself from a git checkout, it runs
git fetchon that checkout instead. GitHub sees your IP address, as with any request, and handles it under GitHub’s privacy statement. This check can’t be turned off yet. A setting for it is planned. - Lyrics lookup. If a song has no lyrics in its tags or in a
.lrcfile next to it, Honeycomb asks LRCLIB, a free lyrics database, sending the song’s title, artist, album and length. LRCLIB sees your IP address. Answers are saved on your computer so the same song isn’t looked up again. You can turn this off in Settings with “Look up lyrics online”.
Honeycomb doesn’t send crash reports, usage statistics or any identifier for you or your computer.
This website
honeycomb.n1ji.dev uses no cookies, no analytics and no trackers. It runs on my own server behind Cloudflare, so Cloudflare and the server see the usual request details (your IP address, browser and the page you asked for) and may keep them in short-lived logs for security and troubleshooting. I don’t use them for anything else. The site loads its font from Google Fonts, so Google sees your IP address when the font is fetched.
Download links go to GitHub, which has its own privacy statement.
If you email me
If you write to [email protected] or open an issue on GitHub, I’ll see what you send and use it only to reply and fix things. I don’t share it or add you to any list.
Children
Honeycomb doesn’t collect personal information from anyone, children included.
Changes
If a future version starts sending anything new, for example Last.fm scrobbling, it will be off until you turn it on, and this page will say what it sends before it ships. The date at the top shows the last change.
